When clamping the clamp onto a wire, the magnetic field around the wire will induce an induced current in the coil inside the clamp meter, allowing measurement of alternating current without direct contact with the conductive core.

Note: Measuring current with a clamp meter can only be done on a single conductor. If you clamp onto a multi-core wire without isolating each individual core, the measurement results will be inaccurate.
